Climate crisis & Chiesi’s emissions reduction:

The climate crisis also represents a health crisis and is affecting the well-being of people around the world. At the same time, the healthcare sector also contributes to climate change. We are aware of our responsibility and, as part of the healthcare system, want to help reduce our carbon footprint.

We have set ourselves the goal of achieving net zero emissions along the entire value chain (Scope 1-3) by 2035. On our journey there, we want to reduce direct emissions and those from purchased energy (Scope 1+2) by 90% by 2030.

Our goals are validated by the independent organisation SBTi. This means that these targets are scientifically sound and sufficiently ambitious to be in line with the global climate targets of the Paris Agreement.

Our Climate Transition Plan sets out the measures for achieving these goals.

Our mission is to improve the quality of life of people around the world while acting in a socially and environmentally responsible way. We are investing 350 million euros in developing a new dosing aerosol with a new propellant gas with a view to protecting the environment and preserving individual therapy options.  This will reduce the carbon footprint of our pressurised metered dose inhaler (pMDI) by up to 90% for asthma and COPD sufferers. A significant example of improving the environment while maintaining therapy options.

In our quest to reduce our carbon footprint, we not only optimise production processes and product development; we also purchase 99% green electricity globally (we actually use 100% electricity from wind energy in Germany), electrify our car fleet, encourage more sustainable business travel and offer bicycle leasing. We are also developing more sustainable products and working closely with our suppliers to reduce their emissions in our work towards achieving our net zero target. We launched the #ActionOverWords campaign in 2021 with the aim of promoting responsibility and climate protection. You can also follow our journey to Net Zero on our ActionOverWords website.

Responsible use of resources

Greenhouse gas emissions are not the only footprint we leave behind as a company. Our approach to water, waste, product sustainability and biodiversity also presents us with challenges and leaves its mark. We are committed to using resources responsibly, analysing our footprint, promoting alternatives, reducing waste and developing packaging that can be recycled.

Our production facilities, headquarters, research centre and logistics centre meet the requirements of the ISO 14001:2015 standard. These environmental management systems promote systematic measures to reduce our environmental impact, for example by using water more efficiently or avoiding waste. In this way, we actively contribute to protecting the environment and conserving natural resources.

We let actions speak for themselves

When it comes to promoting sustainability and shared values in the healthcare sector, empty words are meaningless. We are taking bold steps forward.

We have created a forum, the WeACT Con congress series, for networking stakeholders from the healthcare sector, developing sustainable solutions and implementing them together. The topics of health, environment and sustainability are debated taking a view over the entire healthcare system. In this way, we make an active contribution to the exchange of knowledge for a more sustainable healthcare system and offer space for new initiatives.
